The Oriental 7-Day Quick Weight-Off Diet
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall Trade (July, 1978)
Average review score:

A good book with a great deal of versatilityThis is a good book to start with if you want to expose yourself to different methods of rapid weight loss. If you are a fan of fruits and vegetables, this may be a really good book to look into because a lot of the strategies involve these specific foods as the basic foundation. It's a good way to segue into a better way of eating for health and fitness. I would suggest also that anyone interested in a weight reduction program be cautious with any method that they use, but this may be a sound beginning for those seeking change.

Oriental Medicine: An Illustrated Guide to the Asian Arts of Healing
Published in Paperback by Shambhala Publications (November, 1997)
Average review score:

Excellent Overview! As a Chinese Medicine practitioner with a background in Taoism, I'm constantly on the look out for interesting books. Some books - most Chinese medicine books for example - are rich in textual content, but do little to nourish the eye or other senses. Some 'coffee table' books are a delight to hold and look at, but poor to read. It is rare, especially in the field of traditional medicine, to find one book that succeeds brilliantly in both departments, but here is one. Even if you never read a word (which would be a tragedy) this is a delight - full of the most beautiful colour illustrations and photographs. It is divided into three main parts, covering the worlds of Indian, Tibetan and Chinese medicine. It should be said that as far as illustrations are concerned, the section on Tibetan medicine is the most wondrous: "The concern for precision which characterises all his medical works, led the Regent [Sangye Gyamtso 1653-1705] to the conception and creation of a series of 79 paintings on canvas (thangka) illustrating the entire contents of his commentary: embryology, anatomy, physiology, materia medica, methods of diagnosis, therapy etc.". Included in the riches of Tibetan medicine, is a discussion of the production of detoxified mercury - a oral tradition handed down from one master-physician to another. The process, which has been revived by Khenpo Troru Tsenam, requires a hundred people working for a month and uses iron, copper, silver and hundreds of grams of gold. Once detoxified, the mercury is used in the production of various 'precious pills' incorporating precious metals and stones.
As far as Chinese medicine is concerned, whilst some of what is presented will be familiar, the historical account - and especially its Taoist influences - is scholarly and fascinating (and of course well illustrated), as are the sections on current practice in China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea and Japan.
If you love beautiful and rare books, buy this one.

The Ottaviani Intervention: Short Critical Study of the New Order of Mass
Published in Paperback by Tan Books & Publishers, Inc. (October, 1992)
Average review score:

A wonderful resource...Father Cekada, a devoted Catholic priest who has written many articles and tidbits on the Novus Ordo Mass, has given another invaluable resource to traditionalist Catholics with this book. His commentary and background information in the beginning offers an in-depth view of the situation, from all sides. The text itself, a classic written by the esteemed Cardinals Ottaviani and Bacci, with the assistance of Roman Theologians, still remains as the "thorn in the side" of those modernists who support the radical change in the liturgy. It is still unmatched, in my opinion, in eloquence and effectiveness.
I also recommend Father Cekada's book The Problems With the Prayers of the Modern Mass.

Out of the Earth into the Fire: A Course in Ceramic Materials for the Studio Potter
Published in Paperback by The American Ceramic Society (September, 1995)
Average review score:

A necessary book for any serious potter."Out of the Earth Into the Fire" is a necessary book for any potter , and is especially useful for any potter doing their own glazes. It details in it's four chapters, although very long and comprehensive chapters, all of the glaze and clay making ingredients that you will need. The first chapter deals with the glaze cores. It talks of both the historical and the emperical aspects of all the necessary substances in use. A substance that I can't wait to get my hands on is Rotton Stone. I'll let you read the book to find out why. The second chapter is about clays and clay bodies.Although most of us buy prepared clay this gives us reason to make our own. The next chapter concerns auxillary melters. We find here about glaze surfaces; how to best utilize a substance to make a glossy, a matt, or an opaque surface. Finally the last chapter reveals all we want to know about silica and alumina. The appendices are full of useful material. There are even some good pictures in this book. An unexpected surprise.

Oxford Reader's Companion to Trollope
Published in Hardcover by Getty Ctr for Education in the Arts (November, 1999)
Average review score:

An Essential Guide to An Essential AuthorThis guide, at once learned and down to earth, provides a detailed look at one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, Anthony Trollope. Always a popular favorite, and only now being accorded the academic and critical attention he so richly deserves, this guide takes a reader through his many novels, travel pieces, criticism, translation and biography. Trollope was an indefatigable observer of middle- and upper-middle-class life at the height of the British Empire, during the mid-19th century. His unusually acute psychological observations -- still telling today -- and his keen eye and ear for social nuance and political intrigue are unparalleled in literature (George Eliot, a close friend, said she couldn't have embarked on "Middlemarch" without the groundwork Trollope laid in his Barsetshire novels). This volume includes thoughtful essays on all of the novels, with tidbits on critical reception at the time of their publication. It also describes aspects of Trollope's art -- his prose style, his sense of characterization, his plotting, his humor, his moral depth and his literary antecedents. For someone new to the author, it is a welcome introduction to his work; for those already in thrall to this supreme novelist's skill, it is an invaluable resource, a reminder of the breadth of Trollope's talent. It's a volume to be dipped into or savored at length. Filled with intelligence, insight and wit, this literary companion belongs on the shelf of any thoughtful reader's library.

Painting on the Left: Diego Rivera, Radical Politics, and San Francisco's Public Murals
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (April, 1999)
Average review score:

Excellent!(From Planeta Journal) - For visitors to Mexico City, obligatory visits include the National Palace, Bellas Artes and the Supreme Court -- all places where one can see the work of famed muralist Diego Rivera. His work is found elsewhere, and notably San Francisco, California, where the artist inspired and infuriated a generation of painters. Painting on the Left goes beyond the work of Rivera and illuminates how public art was perceived at the beginning of the 20th century. The descriptions of the bland murals decorating the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition are priceless and likewise the authors interpretation of how artists began to depict social issues in their work. The lively narrative text is complemented with color photos and sketches. Excellent!

The Palliser Novels
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Average review score:

They're called classics for a reasonStart at the beginning, with Can You Forgive Her?, and just keep going straight through the six "political" (aka Palliser) novels. You won't be able to stop; you'll be amazed at how modern, how psychologically penetrating they are (and you'll re-think your conception of Victorian); you'll be hugely entertained. I think I was most surprised by the strength of his characterization of women; equally surprising was the undertow of physical, erotic drives between characters.

The Papers and the Papers
Published in Paperback by Columbia University Press (April, 1999)
Average review score:

Fascinating depiction of a fascinating timeUngar's book is a wonderful retelling of the Pentagon Papers controversy, from start to finish. It follows the stories of Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the documents, the New York Times reporters and editors who worked with them (in a secret location, for fear of Nixon's government), and the compelling legal battle that followed their publication, reaffirming some of our most basic First Amendment rights. If you want to read just one book on the Pentagon Papers, this should be it.

Parking Structures: Planning, Design, Construction, Maintenance and Repair
Published in Hardcover by Chapman & Hall (April, 1999)
Average review score:

Foremost authority in parking. This book is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to all the important issues involved in parking today. There is no other publication for parking structures in the markert place today that comes in a close secom If you think the design of parking structures is simple and straightforward -- think again! Only those who have never designed a parking structure (or did a mediocre, botched job of one) would think that it's easy. Don't kid yourself. The issues are numerous and difficult in all areas: architectural, structural, maintenance, restoration and functional. The book delves in depth in many of these areas. The true value of the book lies in its ability to prepare you to ask intellegent questions. You will be in position to participate in the planning process of a new parking structure and you will understand criteria that go into design decision making. Reading this book will NOT make you an expert. Only years of practical experience will do that for you. Architects, engineers and various other kinds of consultants who "dabble" in parking structures are RANK AMATURES and should be avoided by anyone considering professional services for parking structures.
